Don't leave reviews that often but it's the date Brent passed and I decided to listen to an old favorite,
this show.
This upload sounds great
The playin' is worth the 5 stars alone
anyone know what Instruments Brent is using?
It's out of this world, if you have the time I would listen to this show or at least check out the second set
this show.

This was my 2nd or 3rd show. First Scarlet-Fire of many. Most of the stuff is well played, but certainly not groundbreaking. They were just getting into gear with Mydland, and I liked him much better than Keith & Donna. Of course, I only saw them once in '78 during their decline. Keith was great in the early '70's, but I think I remember him falling asleep at the first show I saw. Most likely to much heroin flowing round his brain, or he was just bored (most likely some combination). At least Jerry could stay awake the whole show when he was binging!!

I am quite fond of this show because it was one of the first Dead bootleg tapes I was introduced to.
This is by far the best Scarlet>Fire of '79 and probably of the Brent era. Who knows, it may even be the best ever. I've never heard a jam like this in the transition into Fire. It's an amazing soundscape guaranteed to send you places you never imagined.
It should also be noted that this Scarlet-Fire is a hidden track on Dick's Picks 13- A Nassau show from '81.

i havent listened much to the rest of the show im totally with the guy below me. Anyone who thinks this Scar>Fire is par, or subpar, is a gosh darn looney! The transition and jam is unlike any other version i've heard, and it flows great. The best jams, IMO, lose their way in one form or another. Like a good Deal, or a good other one, let it grow, hard to handle etc. they just get crazy and u dont know whats happening them BAM!!! they jump back into it and you've never felt better in your entire life. This scarfire really takes that jam to the next level, and brent is as crisp as a fresh cut lawn, just devine. top 3 scar>fire, all time, without a doubt.

The band plays well and vocals are good. But Jerry takes a long time to get moving, but he seems tread water at times. It isn't until long into Scarlet. I don't like what Brent does in Scarlet->Fire. It's repetitive at times and not all that interesting. (To each his own.)

Subject: Brent provided some Energy
Subject: Brent provided some Energy
Overall this is a fun show. Brent provided a desperately needed transfusion of fresh blood, and it's especially obvious in the energy level seen during the fall tour- energy that was sorely lacking in the business-as-usual approach of very late '78/early '79.
This "Scarlet>Fire" is both cool and unique, and I've played the hell out of it. However, while it is interesting, I do not rank it among the truly elite versions of that combo. Long doesn't necessarily equal good, and I agree with the sentiments expressed earlier that the transition jam sort of loses it's way after an interesting start.
I downloaded this a while back but just got around to posting about it. I'm not a big one for griping about the loss of soundboards here- we made due before and we'll make due after - but this is an example of where it does seem a bit heavy-handed. If they were going to use this show, they'd have released more than the portion we got on DP 13 (and even that part had to faded in because of tape problems). In other words, if they're done with it, why not let people have what's left?

Just got done passin a kidney stone a few days ago...had a few left over vicodin's...
Wow, thats the first time I've heard a Scarlet/Fire..especially the transition like that. It melts every which way, and makes you pulse like the old color blobs behind the stage on the walls. It literally took control of my heart beat. Beautifully understated grooves here.
A+ A perfect mellow and breezy one-two punch.
Only part that absolutely BLOWS about this show is that you cannot download it anymore :(.
Did someone REALLY say that Jerry did not contribute to this show? na, cant be, im not THAT gone.

Now we play for Clive. Jack Straw is very nice, Bobby inserted part of his substitute lyrics in this one --- Just an interesting footnote --- it's not "Used to play for acid" on this version as noted by a couple of reviewers of the January 11, 1979 show. A good show, nonetheless, so listen and decide. I like the sound quality.

this is and 5-15-70 are the last to remain.... i have no idea why they're still up.... i'm listening to this now, and it's good... i'm not crazy about it.... i think it's a tad too slow, and jerry's guitar is too low in the mix... i also think that 3/4 of the way into the scarlet-fire jam it's lost it's way, and doesn't know where to go...IMHO i think anything from 77-78 rivals this and 1 of my personal favorites is 5-17-77.... and to the guy who said if there's 1 better let him know... try that 1 on for size, and let me know what you think of it... and btw.... this gets a 5, lol just because.... i can't think of doing otherwise..

Garcia turns on his "wah" for his first two breaks in Mexicali, kind of interesting.
Towards the end of the Scarlet jam, he introduces a motif, and then Brent picks it up and runs mad with it. By the time Garcia decides to segue into Fire, Brent is not about to give up his own riffing; so their two lines become an improbable weave that kind of works. Fun stuff....

this is very nice, with an excellent, even and clear sound quality.
obviously the afore mentioned scarlet>fire is excellent (really the transition to the fire and the fire itself). peggy-o, easy to love you. and terrapin are all winners as well. this could be an essential recording...at least having two three samples from this fall tour seems to be a necessity.

i was a little suspicious about the Scarlet after mickey started making it into country rock (grrrr), but the jam is freakin' amazing.keeps getting better and better. brent is on fire.
the terrapin has a real pretty lady with a fan jam, almost as good as 12.31.78. the playin' is nice and exciting, unlike some of the earlier ones that don't really go anywhere. sound quality is very good, even during the aud patches.
get this show. now.

They loved playing Nassau and I do not recall ever hearing a show that did not rock. This is no exception; hot first set candyman in particular rocks, looks like rain++, mexicali,Peggy-O, all the songs that require Jer to step it up he does. Don't let the undistinguished song list fool you this should be played loud and sound quality is exceptional.

The jam in Scarlet>Fire is out of this world - my personal favorite, even though the tempo of Scarlet is a little slow (perhaps groovy is a better word!) It's a nice, long, spacey jam that tests the limits of what the brain can handle before exploding into joyous smiling fragments of psychedelic extacy... This is the Scarlet>Fire that appears as a hidden track on DP 13 as filler - go buy it.
Great quality, great show. Sorry if I got a little carried away ;)
